Dry rot can be a common problem in most Ontario houses, and should be dealt with as soon as possible, preferably before the fall/winter.  How can you know if you have dry rot?  If you see any bubbling paint or frayed wood, there’s a good chance you have dry rot. Dry rot is caused by an infestation of carpenter ants, and I have extensive experience in diagnosing and repairing these problems. There are 9 types of carpenter ants in North America, and they proliferate in cool, wet climates, very much like what we have here in Ontario in the spring.  Typically you can find carpenter ant damage from their burrowing into wood that has been exposed to water, for example plugged rain eaves that cause overflow of water into unwanted areas, or overspray of lawn irrigation.  Dry rot problems need to be addressed immediately as the carpenter ants can spread deeper into the house, so addressing them while they are superficial is paramount.  Otherwise the problem can get buried deep in your house and become an extensive and expensive problem to repair.

If you suspect you may have dry rot, contact me and I can come and give you a free inspection.

A pretty big dry rot repair!
